I love giving thoughtful, meaningful gifts, and kids’ birthday parties are no exception. When I’m shopping, I try to choose gifts that encourage open-ended play, can be used again and again, and don’t add unnecessary clutter to a family’s home.
These are a few of my favorite go-to gifts for preschoolers and early elementary-aged kids. We own and love every one of these in our house, and they’ve all gotten years of use.
This is one of my favorite inexpensive gifts because it offers endless entertainment for both kids and adults. The IQ Puzzler Pro is compact, making it perfect for restaurants, road trips, waiting rooms, airplanes, or tossing into a backpack.
The only downside? The small puzzle pieces can get misplaced, so it’s best for kids who are ready for games with little parts.
If you haven’t discovered Brain Flakes yet, you’re in for a treat. These simple interlocking discs inspire endless creativity and are one of those toys that kids keep coming back to.
My daughter once made me the sweetest flower bouquet out of them, and we’ve built everything from animals to cars. If you’re looking for inspiration, there are tons of YouTube tutorials that walk kids through different creations.
Yes, there are lots of little pieces, but I actually find them fairly easy to keep contained. It’s a fantastic quiet activity that grows with your child.
Busy Bag
A refreshed busy bag is one of those gifts both kids and parents appreciate.
I like using a clear zipper pouch (Hobby Lobby has great options) or a mini clear backpack and filling it with a few portable activities. Some of my current favorites include:
- Mini Dot-by-Letter book
- Mini Magnetic Tiles
- The IQ Puzzler Pro mentioned above
- Sticker books
- Water Wow books
It’s perfect for restaurants, appointments, travel, or quiet time at home.
For outdoor play, I also love including a Bounceback ball. It’s compact, gets kids moving, and is a fun way to practice hand-eye coordination almost anywhere.
A Favorite Book + Cash + Candy
This has become one of my favorite birthday gift combinations.
I love putting together:
- A favorite book (one of my favorites for preschoolers is Wild About Books)
- Cash equal to the child’s age (turning 6? Include $6!)
- Their favorite candy
It’s simple, fun, and always seems to be a hit.
I used to give Target gift cards fairly often, and I still think they’re a great gift. But I’ve found that younger kids don’t always understand what a gift card is, and some will spend forever trying to decide on the “perfect” thing to buy. Giving cash feels more tangible and exciting to them, and they can choose whether to save it or spend it however they’d like.
If I had to choose one favorite gift on this list, it would be the Mini Yoto Player.
We’ve gifted these to our own kids and nieces, and they’ve been worth every penny. It’s an easy-to-use, screen-free audio player that lets kids independently listen to music, audiobooks, and podcasts using physical cards that pair with the Yoto app via Bluetooth.
One of our favorite features is the free content. My daughter listens to the Yoto podcasts daily, and they’re enjoyable for adults to listen to, too. They include things like draw-alongs, jokes submitted by kids from around the world, and fun facts on all kinds of subjects. There are plenty of free audiobooks available online that can be added to the Yoto cards. We purchase MP3s of favorite songs on Amazon and even record our own audiobooks.
My absolute favorite feature is the ability for family members to record themselves reading stories. Our kids have their uncle’s stories completely memorized, right down to his funny voices and dramatic pauses. Anyone can record themselves reading a book, creating keepsakes that become even more meaningful as the years go by.
One of the best gifts we can give kids is something they’ll actually use, enjoy, and remember. Whether it’s a creative toy they’ll build with for years, a busy bag that makes family outings easier, or an audiobook filled with a loved one’s voice, thoughtful gifts can create lasting memories without adding unnecessary clutter.
I’d love to hear your favorites! What’s your go-to birthday gift for kids?
