A great way to keep clutter to a minimum, yet have a cozy, lively space? PLANTS. Hang them, propagate them, get creative with planters. Aim to keep surfaces clear with the exception of the plant(s). Here are some basic tips for keep those babies alive. I also list a few of my recommended starter plants.

do not over water

Overwatering is from excessive frequency of watering, NOT the amount of water at a given time.

A moisture meter is a useful tool to determine whether a plant needs to be watered. Check the soil once a week and water deeply if the number is at or below the recommendation for the particular plant.

water deeply

Water the soil thoroughly until it comes out the bottom of the pot.

Never let water sit in the bottom of the planter or saucer.

Some leaves and stems don’t like getting wet, so stick to the soil if you’re unsure.

Use a moisture meter if you’re unsure when to water.

Keep the Plant in a Grow Pot

indoor plant care

No need to stress both yourself and your new plant baby out by repotting when it comes home. The plant needs to acclimate to its new environment and repotting may cause damage to the root system.

Other reasons grow pots are great: you can mix and match planters anytime, and they guarantee drainage when deep watering.

Now go decorate with plants to your heart’s content!

Place Pebbles in the Bottom of the Planter or on a Tray

*note: do not put them directly in the grow pot with the plant or mixed in the soil.

Reasons this is helpful:
1. It aids in a proper drainage system. If there is excess water from watering, it prevents it from pooling in the soil potentially leading to root rot.
2. It provides humidity for the plant if water is in the pebbles.
3. Adjusts the height of the grow pot as needed to properly fit in a planter.

I use pebbles in the bottoms of all of my happy plants!
